Tim Madden was born 1912 in Chelsea, London.
He was a family man at heart, an observer of social behaviours with a talent for making us all laugh at ourselves.
Tim was originally 'spotted' as a teenager when painting one of the bridges on the River Thames and encouraged to go to Chelsea Art School.
During the second world war, he served as a gunner and returned with a series of cartoons that were published in a book called the Military Subjects.
After the war he and his wife Helen, and son Peter, moved to Liverpool where his daughter Mary was born. He worked for the Evening Express as a cartoon artist until it folded in the mid 1950's.
He continued to work as a freelance cartoonist with published work in a series of magazines and national newspapers right up to his death in 1993.
Over the years, many people have shared hilarious stories of their encounters with Tim who seemed to be able to make us all laugh effortlessly! His signature bow tie, even for a quick trip to the shops, and his legendary stories from his observations of every day life never failed to have us all in stitches!
Tim gifted us all with a lightness of spirit, reminding us to smile daily. I hope this exhibition will help you access this same joy and invite you to embrace the lighter side of life!
