I am delighted to have the opportunity of introducing to you How’s the Family? and its creator, Tim Madden.
The drawn word (if I may so put it) rather than the written word seems to have a greater appeal for many people these days. This is not necessarily a bad thing - and it reminds us that for many centuries of Christianity religious life and instruction largely depended on visual attraction and teaching. But, alas, too much of it today is vulgar, if not worse.
Tim Madden has shown, with a truly astonishing fertility of imagination and invention, that his light-hearted and always amusing strip cartoon can make us laugh at our own human oddities within the context of religious life and observance. This is thoroughly in the Church’s tradition.
But Tim Madden, I am sure, would not wish me to write a treatise on the significance of his work! He wants you to enjoy his never-aging family and he wants to imagine your chuckles as you turn over the pages. I think his wishes will be granted!
